ever moving

Ballada o soldate 1959
directed by Grigori Chukhrai
cinematography by Vladimir Nikolayev and Era Savelyeva

A road movie with the desperation of a war picture, this film is almost constantly in motion. But as much as I can't share that movement with you, I certainly can show the incredible light. Many of the outdoor daytime shots just glow, as though it were shot in black and silver instead of black and white.

I'm in awe of films from Eastern Europe shot around this time. I don't know if it is the film stock they had access to, or the cameras or the cinematographers or the light in that part of the world, but there's a certain radiance I could label the "Eastern European Glow." Otar Ioselliani's early films have a similar silver-ness to them.
