a lovely place to live out the aftermath of the apocalypse

Five 2

Five (1951)
directed by Arch Oboler
cinematography by Sid Lubow
and Louis Clyde Stouman
architecture by Frank Lloyd Wright

I love the silver glow this film stock gives off. It reminds me of classic Eastern European cinema I've previously admired, but the composition also brings to mind Night of the Living Dead and especially Carnival of Souls. See?

Five 1

Most of all I was impressed with the location shooting in a stunning Frank Lloyd Wright home, built between 1941 and 1946. It was Arch Oboler's own residence.

I've been fortunate - actually been to a Wright home. I agree, the film is lovely. The real thing you must actually see to truly appreciate.

I saw this film about a year ago, and recognized the images here right away. I'd like to see a double feature of this with Zero Hour sometime!

JB:
I've been to the Guggenheim in NYC as well as the building he designed as a trial run here in SF. I'll bet there are some houses around here too- the Oboler house wasn't even listed in my book on FLW.

Lindsay:
I'd pair this with something else architectural, like Les Mysteries du Chateau du de:

I live a couple of miles from this house. It's on Mulholland Highway outside LA. Still there, looks like someone's been doing some kind of work on it lately. Can't see much from the street.
I have never heard of the movie before. I just ordered the DVD -- can't wait to see it!

Glenn;
There are lots of scenes filmed indoors too. The interior is pretty rustic. Can you peek in the windows to see if it is being remodeled? I hope not, and that it's just being preserved. Enjoy the film - it's great!
