Its so eerily beautiful.
I fell in love with this scene when I saw this film as a little girl.
Apparently so did Lars von Trier.
In the commentary for his own film, he names the ending sequence of Europa as an homage to
Night of the Hunter (1955).

There's a parody of this scene in "The Man Who Wasn't There" (the whole movie is one long parody of noir films).
